As a sailor in the Royal Navy you had the choice: either rum or the equivalent in cash - until July 31, 1970 . On Black Tot Day the last ration of rum or “tot” was handed out. The Black Tot 50th Anniversary Rum celebrated the end of this tradition last year. Parts of the anniversary blend now served as the basis for Black Tot Master Blender's Reserve. The limited edition release comes 100 years after rum rations ended in the Australian Navy and demonstrates how widespread the practice once was.
 
For the multinational blend, head blender Oliver Chilton filled parts of last year's Black Tot 50th Anniversary rum into sherry casks and butts - supplemented by a small part of the original British Royal Navy rum as well as particularly fruity, 9-24 year old rums from Guyana and Barbados , Trinidad, Jamaica and Australia.
