Of all the Islay malts, the one from this distillery is known for being moderately peated, and 21 years of aging have further toned down the smokiness. As expected, it is initially difficult to find an obvious peaty character on the nose: the stage is taken up by noticeable fruitiness, candied oranges, flowers and, above all, very rustic notes. Leather and damp earth can be seen and finally give way to a pleasant oak aroma that is reminiscent of an old library. On the palate the fruitiness returns, even more intense: overripe tropical fruits and oranges, raisins, for a profile that is initially surprisingly sweet. Slowly the peat smoke becomes noticeable and the sweetness is replaced by red tea, licorice root and an increasingly tannic, oaky, earthy and spicy style. Juicy, strong and robust, but well rounded.
