Raasay relies on rare woods:
Start of the Oak Species Maturation Series
Windswept, wild and beautiful: a tiny island off the west coast of Scotland is making whisky history. Single malt has been legally distilled for the first time on the Isle of Raasay since 2017. With its Oak Species Maturation Series, the Isle of Raasay Distillery is now opening a new chapter.
The limited bottlings in the series will make the character of individual oak species accessible – and demonstrate that there is no need for pre-fermentation with wine, sherry, etc. to provide whisky with complex, deep aromas.
The first proof is provided by the Isle of Raasay - Quercus Humboldtii Columbian Oak. This single malt, which is fully matured in virgin oak barriques made from Colombian oak, is extremely rare. Anyone who manages to get their hands on one of the 8,500 bottles available worldwide will discover delicious aromas of crème brûlée and heather smoke.
