High Coast is one of the few whiskey distilleries in the world to have a true solera system in one of our warehouses. Six of them are raised and fitted with Swedish oak Solera barrels, an experiment that has proven to be a complete success.

A solera system is based on the continuous blending of younger and older spirits, which increases the complexity of the end result. This means that each bottling will contain a smaller amount of whiskey from the very first bottling.

At the end of the six-tier system are the solera barrels, in our case 225 liter barrels made of Swedish oak. The whiskey to be bottled is taken from these. Above are five floors of criaderas with bourbon barrels containing 200 liters of whiskey of varying ages. The top criadera is the youngest and is topped up with unsmoked nectar from the lower solera barrels with each bottling. Each tier of barrels is refilled from the barrels above once bottling is complete (see illustration under "Resources"). In this way, not only different ages of the whiskey and different batches of the distillate are mixed. The seasons and the climate also mix here over a long period of time, and the system creates an imprint, a taste shadow of our place here on the river bank.
